Busy Avalanche Season

GCSAR has seen increased avalanche calls

The Colorado snowpack lends itself to very dangerous conditions and this season has been particularly bad. According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center this is a once a century snowpack. This season Colorado has seen 12 avalanche fatalities.

GCSAR volunteers have recovered the bodies of three avalanche victims this season. Since January, 2020 we have recovered eight victims who died of trauma in the backcountry. It is always our goal to educate the public so we are never called. We urge all backcountry travelers to get the education, get the gear, get the forecast, and stay out of harms way.
